Whether it is roughhewn or finely carved, wood has a special glow, and the bolder lines of most rustic furniture show off the grain and natural beauty of wood to great effect.
Of course, the rest of the room should support your choice of western style furniture and furnishings. Stucco walls, or built in solid wood bookshelves combined with ivory and other earth tones are excellent choices, as is surrounding yourself with quality wood paneling.
These muted tones make the addition of color in any form even more appealing - for instance, couch throw cushions in bold designs are an excellent addition to wood and leather or other type of earth tone couch.
Perhaps the artwork which best imparts the idea of Western design are the paintings of Bill Owen, one of the most famous cowboy artists, and Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), who was a Hudson Valley painter who did many stunning Western landscapes in his very luminescent style.
