Creating the Perfect Home Office Space

Paying bills? Mailing letters? Working from home? Sure, you could take care of these tasks at the kitchen counter, but a dedicated home office space is a great investment for a number of reasons. Having an intentional workspace can help you:

  • Stay organized
  • Be more productive
  • Separate work from the rest of your living spaces

Not every office has to be a wood-paneled room lined with bookcases (but if you have the space to do it, we’re all for it!) If your home lacks an extra room, we’re here to tell you that you can still create a functional home office. Think outside the box by identifying a small nook or empty corner that could be put to good use.

What kind of office do you need?

Your office should be designed to fit its function. So first, it’s important to think of how you’ll use the space. Do you routinely work from home or run a small business? Are you simply looking for a designated spot to sort through mail and email? Will your desk support computer monitors and other equipment, or do you just need a place to rest your laptop? Will your whole family share the office space or will it be just for you?

Once you understand how you’ll use it, you can create a list of necessary features for your space, such as:

  • Durable work surface
  • Good lighting
  • Multiple drawers
  • and more

Once your list is ready, it’s time to find the two main components of every office: a desk and chair.

Creating the Perfect Home Office Space

The Desk

A desk is the anchor of home office furniture, and for tiny office nooks, it’s truly the item that defines your space. It’s important to understand exactly how much space you’re working with. You want to purchase a desk that is large enough for you to work comfortably on, while small enough to not get in the way.

Don’t forget to also consider storage when buying a desk. You may desire drawer space to file away important documents or store note cards and stamps. While a larger office space may afford additional space for separate cabinets or storage, a smaller space may need a piece that pulls double duty as both filing cabinet and desk.

The Chair

While it may seem smart to go with the most stylish chair you can find, don’t forget that sitting at a desk for hours at a time calls for comfort, too. We suggest going with a padded chair for optimum comfort that doesn’t sacrifice style. Before you purchase the chair, make sure that you can sit comfortably at your desk in it. Is there enough room for your legs to fit underneath? Do your arms rest comfortably on the table for typing or writing? These small things will quickly become big annoyances the longer you spend in your office, so be sure to test it out in store.

Practical Accessories

Home office furniture is fun to play up with accessories that match your home’s interior design. We say, once you have the desk and chair squared away, go for form over function with the accessories. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • We love using a unique table lamp, rather than a traditional desk lamp, to create a warm, comfortable atmosphere in your office.

The little things make a difference; hide away generic, mismatched pens and instead display a uniform set of elegant pens on the desk. We like a simple wooden pen for a timeless look.

Stylish Storage

Stacks of papers, unsightly cords, and other work essentials don’t always make for good design (and aren’t what you want to see at home). Find ways to organize your items while maintaining the style of your space. Our favorite picks:

  • A large, turquoise-accented tray can be a simple way to wrangle loose papers and mail.
  • Keep a decorative box on the desk for spare cords, stamps, and other items you want within reach but out of sight.
  • If you’re tight on space, consider going vertical with storage. Hang shelves to house books and binders, while accenting with stylish odds and ends. It’s an easy way to create functional decoration.
