Brumbaugh’s Takes On Charleston, South Carolina.

Secrets from Designer Sally Brumbaugh on Styling the Iconic Cigar Lounge.

In this month’s blog, we take a look at the recent Garden & Gun event, SEWE: Cocktails & Conservation, where designer Sally Brumbaugh styled the iconic Cigar Lounge for the space. From the inspiration behind the design to the fun surprises faced during the project, Sally shares her insights and experience. Find out how she curated the perfect furniture pieces for the event and how she transformed the venue into a chic and magical lounge area. Plus, get an exclusive look at the products used from Brumbaugh’s Furniture & Design that you can bring into your own home.

What was your inspiration for the Brumbaugh’s Cigar Lounge you styled?

The Garden & Gun corporate offices are in an old Cigar Factory! So, what better than to feature our custom-curated cigars and furnishings that tied into that whole look of a library/study feeling.

What is your process like on a design project like this?

The location and venue always dictate our design inspiration. For this event, we chose those pieces from great leather upholstery to accent items that would showcase Brumbaugh’s Furniture & Design and how we transcend what we do to any location across the country.

What mood were you hoping to strike with your design?

When we first were made aware that the building was a former cigar factory, it was an easy and exciting space to create. Charleston is a beautiful and historic city with a forward-thinking mindset in everything — from unique restaurants and shops to the charming people who live and work there. We knew our design of this venue would also bring that high-end look that is so much a part of the local scene.

Were there any issues/challenges with the space or the event you had to consider?

The space was perfect! I would not have changed a thing, and we were very much ‘spot-on’ in what we took to showcase. The event was greatly attended by what we would definitely consider a “Brumbaugh’s” customer.

What’s your process for styling an out-of-state event? Any challenges?

There were no challenges. When you participate in an event, especially with bringing furniture halfway across the country to set up for a few days, you must be very prepared and organized! You have to think of what might be a problem and solve it before you ever leave home. Since we furnish homes all over the country, we know what we need to have in place in order to be prepared for almost any scenario. From extra extension cords to nails to hanging pictures — you name it — we’ll bring it.

What was the most fun part about designing this space?

The historic location and architecture of the building were outstanding. When you get the opportunity to furnish a venue with this type of character … the pieces you choose … it can transform it into something magical.

Did anything about the finished design surprise you?

Any special anecdotes about the experience you’d like to share?
The whole cigar experience was a unique unexpected ‘treat’ — the men and the women were equally enthralled. We had someone hand-rolling cigars in the space we designed atop one of our fabulous Jason Scott Collection desks. The furniture we curated for the event allowed all the guests to enjoy the experience of Brumbaugh’s Furniture & Design right there at this event.

What products did you use from your store that you’d like to share with homeowners?

We have always been bold with color at Brumbaugh’s and never shied away from bringing warmth into a home. We showcased a fabulous hand-knotted rug with a rich, warm brown leather Chesterfield sofa. Accent swivel chairs that we custom-designed for the event with other unique pieces fit the space and the theme of SEWE perfectly.
