One Easy Way to Refresh Your Bedroom’s Style

When the weather gets cold and the days get shorter, you may find yourself cozying up in your bedroom with a good book or TV show a little more often than normal. Because you’ll be spending a few more nights in this season, we think there’s no better time to give your bedroom a quick design refresh.

At Brumbaugh’s, we can help you find the new bed, dresser, or chair for your bedroom if you’re ready for a do-over. But, if you’re craving some change and aren’t ready to invest in a new bed or bureau, focus on just a couple small changes; you’d be surprised how much a few styling changes can refresh the look of your space. Our tip for a quick new bedroom look? Swap out your nightstands and give them a quick restyle. A new rustic nighstand or two can be the most affordable bedroom furniture buy and, with the right decor updates, can improve your bedroom’s look overnight!

Below, read our tips for finding the best rustic nightstands for your bedroom.

Tips for Selecting a Nightstand

  • The controversial topic: should your nightstands match or simply complement one another? We say you can go either way. Our favorite approach is to select a matching pair of rustic nightstands and then style them differently to create interest on either side.
  • Find a pair of nightstands that are the same height as your bed — or just a few inches taller. This is usually the ideal height for easily grabbing a book or water glass (…or hitting the snooze button).
  • Remember to let your bed take the lead. Do you have a large king-sized bed with an elaborate headboard? Or is it a queen-sized bed with a simple iron bed frame? Your nightstands don’t have to perfectly match your bed, but they should complement the style and size of the bed they’ll be in close proximity to. With a larger bed, you can afford to go with a larger table or even a small dresser. But, if it’s a smaller, slimmer bed, opt for a piece with thinner lines and smaller dimensions.
  • Nightstands come with and without drawers. For your own bedroom, we say go for a drawer (or two!). The extra space is great for hiding away charging cords, remotes, and anything else that looks better tucked away.

Tips for Styling a Rustic Nightstand

Once your nightstands are in place, you’ll be surprised how much two small pieces of furniture can change a room. To complete the transformation, refresh the styling of your nightstands, too. While nightstands are necessary for glasses, lip balm, alarm clocks, phone charge cords, and more, that doesn’t mean they can’t look stylish at the same time. Utilize attractive, western-style decor items that can hide away items that may be less than glamorous.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Hang art, mirrors, or even light sconces above your nightstands to add height above the table’s surface and create greater symmetry between the two sides of the bed.

  • Place a small catchall tray on each tabletop to corral glasses, jewelry, and more.
  • Let books pull double-duty as a decor tool. Stack them to create a small, elevated space for a candle or picture frame. Or, place them vertically with an attractive bookend to add additional height.
  • Make sure your nightstand has a variety of items in different sizes. If you have a large table lamp and several medium-sized books, add in a few small accessories that will give the surface a more dimensional look. Look for items around your home to fill in the gaps; it could be anything from a sentimental knick-knack to a vintage clock or even a tiny votive candle.

A few other practical tips before decorating your nightstands:

  • Consider getting a glass top for delicate wood or fabric surfaces that could be damaged by the occasional water glass or cup of tea.
  • Place a cord organizer on the back of your nightstand to help guide unruly charging cords. It will also prevent them from falling onto the floor when you reach for them at night.
  • If your nightstand has open space between the legs, utilize it for additional storage. Place a woven basket or another container that matches your room’s decor to store a spare blanket, magazines, and more.
