2015 Interior Paint Trends: Safer Is Better

What’s on your walls? Do you know the chemical components?

The new trend is moving away from oil-based paint. Some states are starting to pass laws against using oil-based paints. Oil-based paints give off gases of volatile organic compounds (VOCS). New rules and regulations are being passed to prohibit the use of these solvents and oils (linseed oil). Homeowners are also timid to the fact that oil-based paint does not resist mildew that may form in a room with high levels of moisture. Because of this preference, people are choosing a latex paint over the oil-based paint. Latex paint is mildew resistant, retains oil, does not chalk, and it is easy to apply.

Consumers are mainly concerned about the health risk with oil-based paint and thus a healthier alternative is paramount. Upon researching sustainable or “green” paint products I found an industry leader or pioneer in this endeavor. Amongst my product research was that of the “Harmony” paint by Sherwin Williams. The product is a zero VOC “Green Sure” paint. This innovative line helps to reduce odors and improve air quality. This paint is Green Guard Indoor Air Quality Certified and Green Guard certified for children and schools. This is an excellent product as it utilizes Formaldehyde Reducing Technology and Anti-microbial agents inhibit the growth of mold and mildew.

I have also been delving into the new innovations into product additions. My research led me to “Super Paint”, which is a primer/paint in one. This is available in interior and exterior acrylic latex paint. This new, innovative product allows for, fast, easy application, excellent hide, and durability. The next innovative product is a Hybrid. This is a true cohesion of water-based and oil-based paint. This is a ProClassic paint that the painter can wash their own brush with water, but the paint dries as hard as an oil-base. There is a trend in homeowners not wanting oil-based paints; therefore, this product is in high-demand.
