Texas Wineries That Are Worth a Weekend Road Trip

A fine wine might not be the first thing you think of when you think of the Lone Star State. But, Texas actually has a thriving wine scene filled with award-winning wineries created with locally-grown fruits.

Our hilly areas, varying climates, and fertile soil allow our winemakers to produce a wide range of world-class vinos that are sold at a bargain price compared to those in popular wine regions like California and Oregon. Even better, Texas wineries have developed a winery experience that’s all our own—full of southern charm, without the stuffy old-world feel of European wineries.

So, pick up your wine glass, pack up the car, uncork your schedule and listen up. Here are the best Texas wineries for your next weekend road trip.

Fall Creek Vineyards - Tow, Texas

We couldn’t start this list without heading into the Texas Hill Country—the state’s most notable wine region. Our first stop is at Fall Creek Vineyards in Tow, Texas (which sits on a picturesque corner of Lake Buchanan and is about 85 miles northwest of Austin). The Texas Hill Country vineyard is one of the oldest in the region, and its founders, Ed and Susan Auler, are credited with starting the Texas Hill Country wine scene when they planted vines at their central Texas ranch in 1975.

Their wine is 100% Texas born and bred, and they produce all of them on-site, including their award-winning dry rosé and sauvignon blanc varietals from their signature Vitner’s collection. Check their online schedule for festivals, special dinners, chef appearances, themed tastings, crafting classes, and even yoga. An affordable $20 fee allows you to taste five of their carefully pre-selected wines and food pairings; however, this winery experience isn’t an impromptu sort of affair. Reservations are recommended because it draws plenty of visitors, especially on weekends. But, conveniently, it’s open seven days a week.

Duchman Family Winery - Driftwood, Texas

Deep in the heart of Hill Country, you’ll find Duchman Family Winery—a winemaker that’s bringing an Italian flair to the Texas wine scene. The estate is located in Driftwood, Texas just down the road from the famous Salt Lick BBQ (so, feel free to grab a bottle and pick up some brisket for a true Texas tasting experience).

The limestone buildings topped with terracotta tile roofs set a romantic, Tuscan mood and you could easily spend all day taking in the breathtaking views of the property that was dubbed one of the most picturesque wineries in the U.S. by HGTV. But while the facility is beautiful, the real star of Duchman’s is the wine. Duchman Family Winery’s bottles, including its Double Gold and Vermentino, have won numerous awards and are on par with some of the best vinos from Italia.

When you visit the winery, you can sample six of Duchman’s world-class wines before buying a full bottle. Afterwards, enjoy a bottle on their patio under the shade of one of the property’s giant oak trees while munching on a charcuterie board or a homemade pizza for a little taste of Tuscany in Texas.

Pedernales Cellars - Stonewall, Texas

We can’t discuss Texas Hill Country wineries without mentioning Pedernales Cellars in Stonewall, Texas. With award-winning wines and unparalleled views of the Pedernales River Valley, this is a must-stop location on the Texas wine trail, especially if some in your crowd don’t believe you can find good Texas wine.

Started by the Kuhlken family in the 1990s, this winery pioneered the idea of a “reserve” tasting experience in Texas. For those who make a reservation, visitors can taste their very best wines under the guidance of a certified sommelier, in a private setting. This special tasting experience is highly recommended, especially for those coming from out of town—you’ll understand the multiple awards after one sip. Weekends also mean live music at Pedernales, as well as grape stomps during harvest season. Make sure to check their calendar and book a reservation well in advance to get your spot at this Hill Country family-owned favorite.

English Newsom Cellars - Lubbock, Texas

Lubbock isn’t only known for Buddy Holly and the Texas Tech Raiders. Drive outside of the city long enough, and you’ll see acres upon acres of a flat West Texas landscape blanketed in rows of grape vines that local wineries are putting to good use.

Case in point: English Newsom Cellars. Formerly known as CapRock Winery, this purveyor of potent potables has mastered the art of a good vino—and a good first impression. When you walk up, you’ll be taken aback by the main building’s romantic Spanish-style architecture. Plus, their Malbec and Tempranillo wines will have your palate dancing the Texas two-step.

Delaney Vineyards - Grapevine, Texas

If you want a wine experience without going too far out of the city limits, Delaney Vineyards is worth a visit. The winery is located at 2000 Champagne Blvd., Grapevine, Texas (a fitting address for a vineyard). And even though you’ll technically still be in DFW, when you arrive you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the French countryside. The building has a gorgeous 18th-century French chateau-inspired architecture that’s nestled among 10 acres of lush grapevines, making it one of the most impressive wineries and wedding destinations in North Texas. Owner, Jerry Delaney, has won more than 120 medals in national and international wine competitions, and their most popular wines include a fruity Texas Rose, Chardonnay, and a Cynthiana—a vino named for the variety of grapes they grow.

While many newlyweds flock here for their nuptials, they also offer tastings and tours for the general public. So, buy a bottle of bubbly, sit on their beautiful patio, and take in those grapevines that this city is named after.
