Choosing The Perfect Area Rug

We all love area rugs.  They are the perfect home decor piece to both define a space and enhance your interior design. Not to mention the fact that they add a warm and cozy vibe to your home.

Choosing the perfect area rug is no small task. There are multiple factors that you need to consider, and the rug you choose will make a big impact on your space, good or bad.  The rug needs to be the perfect size for the room, the colors and pattern need to be cohesive with your current decor, and there are very specific ways you should arrange your furniture on the rug. Here’s what you need to have in mind when shopping for your next area rug.

Choosing The Right Size

Before you even begin your search for area rugs, know the size of your space!  It will be beneficial to know both the size of your room and the size of your seating arrangement because all of this will come into play.

Keep in mind that rugs may look overwhelmingly large in the store, but can easily get swallowed up when placed in your room. Rugs that only fit one piece of furniture like a coffee table will looked dwarfed in the room and will not add much to your interior design.

Choosing The Right Arrangement

In a master or guest bedroom, the standard placement of a rug is under the bottom two-thirds of the bed. Be sure that your area rug is large enough that sticks out a few feet on the sides so you can step down onto it from bed.

Kids’ bedrooms are a little bit different, considering they typically have smaller beds and more floor space to play. Instead of placing it directly underneath the bed, place the rug beside the bed for playtime on the floor!

When it comes to rugs in your living room, Aimee Beatty, a stylist for Pier 1 Imports, says to be sure to choose a rug that extends beyond the coffee table and at least under the first set of legs on sofas or chairs.

Arrangement is pretty obvious when it comes to dining areas: the table and all four legs of the chairs should be on the rug. When using a rug in a dining space, remember to always use a flat rug! Flat rugs make cleaning up easy after meals, especially if you have little ones!

Choosing The Right Shape

Look for a rug that fits the orientation of the room it will be in. It is hard to go wrong with a rectangular rug, they look fabulous in almost any space.

Some shapes, like squares, are more difficult as they typically only work in a square room. Round rugs are great for foyers, kids rooms, or anywhere that is a more casual and playful space. They are also great for square rooms, as they soften the space.

Choosing The Right Pattern

More likely than not, your furniture will be around a lot longer than your rug.  Since this is the case, be sure to base your rug around your furniture, not your furniture around your rug.

You definitely want to mix patterns with your rug and furniture. The important thing is to know how to mix patterns correctly. If you have furniture with a large print design you should definitely pair it with a small patterned rug (and vice versa).

When choosing a rug pattern, be sure to consider the amount of furniture that would be covering up the pattern. Rugs with an all-over repeat pattern are a great choice because you don’t have to worry about covering up a significant part of the rug design.
