Can’t Wait For Autumn? Here are Our Favorite Fall Activities in North Texas

We love summertime and all the fun that comes with the season of sun. But, let’s be honest: with the heat waves hitting like they are in Texas, we’re dreaming of the (hopefully) cooler days of autumn.

Family-friendly weekends without sweltering temperatures, all-pumpkin everything, football games, cozy sweater weather, markets with handmade artisanal goods, and Oktoberfest are among some of the things to look forward to as August comes to an end.

If you too are daydreaming of days when the thermometer displays less than three digits and looking for things to fill up your itinerary this coming season, then keep reading. We’re listing our favorite activities to help you make the most out of the crisp fall weather in North Texas.

Hall's Pumpkin Farm

Of course, we’re starting this list off with pumpkins. Pumpkin pies, pumpkin carving, pumpkin spice lattes—you’d be lying if that gourd didn’t spark at least a little bit of joy in you when fall comes around.

And thanks to the abundance of farmland we have, there are plenty of pumpkin patches in the North Texas area to keep you busy all month long. But perhaps our favorite, and the most popular one in the area, is Hall’s Pumpkin Farm in Grapevine. There, you can pick the perfect pumpkin to put on your front porch, make your way through a two-acre corn maze, grab a cup of apple cider, and then hop on a hale bale ride to finish the trip off.

Western Days in Lewisville

At Brumbaugh’s, celebrating Western culture is a big part of who we are as a company and as a family. That’s why Western Days is one of our favorite celebrations here in DFW. For two amazing days, the heritage and music of the West come alive in Old Town Lewisville each fall. This year’s festival runs September 23–24 and features live entertainment with headliners such as the Randy Rogers Band and Gary Allen. You’ll also find vendors, children’s activities, indigenous dance performances, a tamale eating contest, and a mullet championship. That’s right. A mullet championship.

Admission is free before 7 p.m. and $15 dollars after, so head out there early to get a good spot for a show.

Addison Oktoberfest

Fall means Oktoberfest season and thankfully, you don’t have to travel overseas to celebrate this time-honored German tradition. Addison hosts one of the longest-running and largest Oktoberfest celebrations in DFW that usually sees around 70,000 festival goers each year. There are polka bands, authentic German foods, family-friendly activities, and, of course, more than 20 craft beer offerings. This year the celebration runs from September 15 through September 18. Admission is free Thursday and Sunday, and $10 on Friday and Saturday.

Autumn at the Arboretum

The Dallas Arboretum has a great reputation for showcasing dazzling displays of seasonal flowers and foliage—and the fall is no exception. For the past 17 years, the Arboretum has hosted Autumn at the Arboretum and the theme for this year’s festival is “A Fall Fairy Tale.” You can expect to see Cinderella’s carriage alongside a Pumpkin Village filled with 20-foot-tall decorated pumpkin houses. The display incorporates nearly 100,000 pumpkins, gourds, and squash sourced from the Pumpkin Capital of Texas, Floydada.

You’ll also find yourself taking in the breathtaking fall colors with 150,000 flowers—from marigolds, chrysanthemums, and more—blooming across the Arboretum’s 66 acres.

The festivities run from September 17 through October 31, with ticket prices ranging from $12-$20 (but it’s free for the kiddos under two).

The Texas State Fair

In North Texas, fall means the Texas State Fair, and most people try to go at least once before the celebration ends. The fair is a menagerie of all things Texas and hosts rodeos, livestock events, football games (like the iconic Red River showdown between Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners), live music, and more. There you can get your fill of carnival rides, midway games, plenty of good ole’ fried food, and of course, your visit wouldn’t be complete without snapping a pic next to our beloved mascot, Big Tex.

This year, the fair runs from September 30 through October 23, so there’s plenty of time to catch a concert, stuff your belly, and take a spin on the iconic Ferris wheel.
